Dystrophy, Corneal
One of a number of inherited diseases—all potentially blinding disorders which frequently require corneal transplantation
to improve visual acuity—characterized by the accumulation of abnormal material in the cornea, typically classified
depending on which of the three levels of the cornea they primarily affect, including anterior corneal dystrophies (such as
map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy and Reis-Bückler’s dystrophy), stromal dystrophies (such as granular, lattice, and
Avellino dystrophy), and posterior corneal dystrophy (such as Fuch’s dystrophy and posterior polymorphous dystrophy
or PPMD).
